When the Doctor tells you to take two aspirin and get some rest, you usually feel better in the morning. The Doctor knows best. So when you follow his (or her) instructions, you usually feel better.
Today’s Lesson takes that phrase and shows you how we use it to mean anything that goes well, not just something that the Doctor tells you to do.
In English, “Just What the Doctor Ordered” is a pleasant way to say that things turned out very well. You can mutter it under your breath, or say it out loud. But anyhow you use it, it says that you are happy about the way things turned out. Just take a look at the Asahi Shimbun’s Sports Headline article for Japan’s National Soccer team. The article praises the Japan team for getting a win just when they needed it to boost the team spirits.
The Doctor, in this case, is not a medical doctor, and the prescription was not made in advance. But the result was that everyone feels better. So it is a perfect fit for this phrase “Just What the Doctor Ordered”.
Some other places you can use this phrase:
- When you get a day off because it snowed heavily…just on the day that you were hoping to relax.
“This snow day is just what the doctor ordered. Now I can finish reading that book I started last month.” - When your best friend orders your favorite drink after a hard day at work
“Thanks! This is just what the doctor ordered. How did you know I love this drink? - When your husband takes the kids for day.
“Ahh, some peace and quiet at last…just what the doctor ordered” - And anyplace else that you are pleased with the result!

見るとべつに医者さんと関係なく使う文句ですよ。先生は別に注文はしていないし。使うときは結果のことだけをメインにして、皆が元気にまた嬉しくに終われば言う。この記事はぴったりその通りです。
